I've always loved the variety of birds you see in Sydney.
The ibis isn't exactly my favorite kind of bird, but they're a
startlingly large animal to encounter in the middle of a busy city.
And I've always had a soft spot for the cockatoos.
Their mad screeching cuts through the loudest traffic noise, and it's
amusing to see a bird considered by Americans to be an exotic pet, just
flying around wild in an urban area.
Then there's the bats.
For those of you who haven't been to Sydney, it's an astonishing sight
to see the vast clouds of enormous bats that fly over the city at dusk.
The low light makes for difficult photography, but I've tried to give
an impression of the size and the number of them – they appear to
be about the size of a hawk, but in some of the shots they look like
swarms of moths around a lamppost.
