Oh Canada!

In the middle of 2003 I needed to change my U.S. visa. My original visa was due to expire in October of that year, and I had changed jobs, which meant a change of visa type (from L-1 to H-1B, if you're interested). I obtained the visa approval in July, but to update the visa stamp in my passport meant a trip out of the country - the visa stamp could not be issued in the U.S. And the nearest foreign country is Canada.
Then I got an email from my friends Grant and Marcus saying they were coming to visit New York in September/October. This coincided with a dance party in Montreal (the Black & Blue Party), so we all agreed that they should should include a side-trip to Canada as part of their vacation and I could take this opportunity to fulfil my obligations to the USCIS (successors to the INS).
