The principal reason for my trip was to attend the wedding of my school
friend Glyn to his long-time partner Cath.
Glyn had contacted me a few months earlier and invited me to be best man
— an invitation I was delighted to accept.
Then, just before I set off for England, I got word that Glyn had had a
heart attack.
I'm pleased to report that he appeared to be making a good recovery when
I saw him, but apparently the initial prognosis was somewhat alarming.
So the wedding was postponed until early in the New Year, and I
rescheduled my visit to them from a four-day stay to an afternoon at
their home in Sedgwick, near Kendal.
The weather was beautiful on the day of my visit, and after lunch we all
went for a walk around the village.
A fairly slow walk, with plenty of pauses for Glyn to catch his breath
and for me to take photographs.
The tiny village of Sedgwick is dominated by a canal bridge which used to
carry the Lancaster to Kendal canal over the road.
The canal fell into disuse long ago but the bridge remains — a
massive stone structure with room for only one lane of traffic beneath it.
From Sedgwick I headed up the Lune Valley and across the Pennines to my
brother's place on the East Coast.
The afternoon light was great for photography but unfortunately, the
shadows were getting fairly long by this stage of the afternoon.
I got a few shots which don't quite do justice to the beauty of the
scenery.
And there are a couple of shots of trains for the train enthusiasts in
my family.
