Takahē
The takahē (Porphyrio hochstetteri) was once considered extinct, but in 1948 a small population was discovered in the South Island. There is now a recovery program managed by the New Zealand Department of Conservation / Te Papa Atawhai, and the known population has grown to over 500.
They resemble a bigger, fatter pūkeko, and Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne has several birds.
